The Arab Street-- Predictions before toppling of Taliban and Hussein versus today after Afghani Blue Finger Revolution, Iraqi Purple Finger Revolution, Palestinian election and Lebanese Red, White and Green Revolution.

The collapse of the Syrian-controlled puppet government of Lebanon today makes it a good day to remind ourselves of the dire predictions by critics of George W. Bush when he announced plans to topple the Taliban that doing so would ignite a "revolution against the West" in the "Arab Street."  Since then, we've witnessed the Blue Finger Revolution in Afghanistan, the Purple Finger Revolution in Iraq, the Palestinian elections and now the Lebonese Red, White and Green Revolution against Syria.  Added to the effects of the Rose Revolution in Georgia and the Orange Revolution in the Ukraine, those of us who supported Bush can take a measure of satisfaction that history is evolving to validate Bush's assertion that the desire for freedom beats in all normal human hearts.

How satisfying it is that Bush's strategic vision (in contrast to the linear tic-tac-toe tactics we applied before 9-11) shaping this trend of history in progress will ultimately produce results for which future generations will be grateful and for which the Not In Our Name crowd will have earned not credit but scorn and contempt.  How comforting it must be to families of troops killed or injured in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom that their sacrifices will ultimately be proven to deserve the honor and gratitude of generations as did those who died or sustained terrible injuries defeating the Nazis, Imperial Japan and the Italian Fascists in World War II.  Who could not equate today's troops with the Greatest Generation?  Who could not equate the historic power of their accomplishments with those of the Greatest Generation?  Only the myopic "Not in Our Name" crowd.

Today is a good day to reflect on the sentiments expressed in the lyrics of "Thanks in Our Name for Deeds in Our Name."  Today is also a good day to appreciate the difference between a President following a strategic vision for posterity rather than tactical goals for a "legacy."

How paradoxical that the year* of the worst earthquake/ Tsunami in modern history is becoming the year of seismic political shifts in the balances of power away from tyranny and medievalism and toward human-rights-respecting democracy and modernity.

*I remember, of course, that the earthquake causing the Tsunami occurred on Dec. 25, 2004, but most of the "hard work" setting the stage for the seismic political events of 2005 had been performed in 2004.

On CBS News 60 Minutes, Dan Rather reveals identity of "Deep Threat," an "unimpeachable source" revealing that George W. Bush-- not CBS-- fired Rather's underlings for bogus National Guard "report."

Today, Dan Rather and CBS News' 60 Minutes stunned the world by revealing the identity of what was until now Rather's most closely guarded secret-- the "unimpeachable source" for the bogus news reports about George W. Bush's service in the Texas Air National Guard.  That same source is now prepared to reveal that Bush, rather than CBS, fired Rather's underlings, whom Rather had previously blamed for flaws in what Rather tenaciously described as a "true" report based on fraudulent documents.

A stunned world listened as Rather explained that the source was a former high-level intelligence official whom until now Rather had only been able to identify as "Deep Threat."  The source, also known as "Mr. Blue Eyes," inadvertently exposed himself during a press conference in the Slavic Republic in response to a staged question designed to enable him to equate CBS's firing of Rather's underlings with Putin's jailing of Russian news executives who refused to tout Putin's party line during Putin's last campaign.  Knowledgeable internationalists assert that the person identified by Rather as "Deep Threat" bears a striking resemblance to Vladimir Putin, but Rather would only say that he has "unimpeachable evidence" that "Deep Threat" is a "highly reliable source" for whom even George Bush vouched as a person "who says what he means and means what he says."

In a later confrontation with a Western reporter, Vladimir Putin denied that he was Dan Rather's "Deep Threat" source, but he insisted that George Bush, rather than CBS, actually controls CBS and that Karl Rove is its secret CEO.  According to Putin, this is how Rove manipulated CBS News into helping re-elect Bush by broadcasting the bogus "news" report disparaging Bush's National Guard Service.  Finally, Putin told the reporters that his policies toward the press are identical to those adopted by Thomas Jefferson in his political battles with the Federalists for spreading the false rumors that Jefferson had slept in more beds than Washington and that, therefore, he, rather than Washington, deserved the title "Father" of his country.  "Here, here," said Rather.

Feb. 26, 2005--

Canadian Prime Minister says, "No defense, please-- we're Canadians"; High school principal requires plunging necklines for females; Washington Post says Condoleeza Rice exudes "sex and power."

Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin announced that Canada will insist on being excluded from the missile-defense system being developed by the United States.  Martin said Canada's reason for such decision was the desire to avoid participation in a system that would lead to an "arms race."   In a related story, Prime Minister Martin also announced Canada's request to be excluded from the Pacific Rim Tsunami Warning system out of a desire to avoid participating in a system that would lead to more earthquakes.  (MacKay cartoon courtesy of Graeme MacKay-- go here for more.)

News reports say that a high-school principal ordered the yearbook editor to remove the senior picture of a female student who wore the tuxedo top prescribed for males rather than the "drape" and "beads" prescribed for females.  The student, whom the report described as a "self-proclaimed lesbian," said she preferred not to pose in a drape that would "expose her chest."  Denying that the girl's sexual orientation was the real reason for ordering removal of the picture, the principal explained that what motivated his decision was the desire to protect the traditional values exemplified by plunging necklines for females.  Of course, if the principal were really literate-- i.e., a regular reader of the New York Times and Washington Post-- he would have learned -- as exemplified by the following story-- know that long coats and high boots rather than plunging necklines exude femininity.

The Washington Post published an article asserting that "Condoleeza Rice's coat and boots speak of sex and power."  Another article in the same issue of the Post lamented the tendency of the British press to engage in "tabloid journalism" obsessing over the attire of various members of the royal family.  When reporters asked Dr. Rice why she had suddenly begun wearing knee-high boots she explained it this way:  "Everyone knows that it's quite foggy at Foggy Bottom, so no one should be surprised that one would need a full-length coat to work there, but few people know that most of the fog is caused by methane rising from the deep layer of fertile material that comprises the Bottom at Foggy Bottom."

Foggy Bottom Catwalk.

I'm Condi, whose long coat and boots
were said by the Post to exude
my lusting to flex
both "power and sex"
to dazzle those Old-Europe dudes.

However, the reason I need
a long coat and boots to my knees
is Fog at the Bottom
where layers have gotten
not only quite fertile but deep.

Moreover, the folks who perceive
my long-coat and knee-boots to be
the way that I dress
for "power and sex"
must never have seen the real me.

Though smart women needn't be nude
for "power and sex" to exude,
if seeking to flex
my "power and sex"
a scantier outfit I'd use.

And so, for this slide-show I've written
this lim'rick for those who are smitten
by needs to observe
attire I'd prefer
when "power and sex" is my mission.

For "power" I dress to convey
a stately cerebral cachet,
but if I would flex
my weapons of sex,
the next frame shows what I'd display.

Coming soon-- a music-video featuring Condoleeza Rice wearing her long coat and high boots to play the piano while standing and simultaneously singing Nancy Sinatra's 1960's hit song, "These Boots Are Made for Walking."
