What it means to be an "American." ( limericks) (20000704-01)
    On this July 4th celebration,
    let's ask who we'd call "real Americans."
    Some seem to fear
    the folks not born here
    and don't think of them as "Americans."
    Some think the place of one's birth
    is how we should measure one's worth,
    and they seem to say
    in subliminal ways,
    "We better since we were here first."
    But being American means
    much more than the source of our genes.
    It's better defined
    by hopes in the minds
    of those who come here to be free.
