The Nanny Boom--Motherhood by Proxy (limericks) (du20000711-01)
    Yesterday Fox News reported
    to what proxy-moms have resorted
    It is uncanny
    that now they hire nannies
for kids to have proper consorting.
To teach their kids morals and charm
and still chase careers with aplomb,
    They will "invest"
    30-grand for "the best"
not knowing such person is "Mom."

---Inspired by Fox News Channel story yesterday (07-10-00) about the exploding trend in Silicon Valley for mothers with careers to pay $30,000 to $70,000 per year to provide "the best" for their children by hiring "highly educated" nannies to raise their children, help the children feel they are important members of the family "team," and teach them "morals" and "family values."  Fortunately for my kids, the "highly educated" person who taught them "morals" and "family values" and made them feel they were the center of our family was their Mom.   Jim Wrenn, Editor.

New-Millennium Child Care:  Yuppie Version of Pet Care (a limerick)(du20000507-01)
(Can you say "taxpayer funded"? -- Better yet, can you say "Hillary Care")
I'm tired of the whining and frets
by couples who have kids as pets.
The proper child care
is a Mom who is there--
not someone who's paid to hear frets.
Too many women fall prey
to the outlandlish notion that they
must have a career
to satisfy peers
and leave kids with strangers all day
.

Why do career gals suppose
that others should pay through the nose
so they can pay less
for care they think best
so they can keep up with the Jones?
My boys were quite lucky guys
as apples of their Mama's eyes.
She had a career
but quit without fear
to be Mom for her special guys
 .

She could have preferred a career
and sent them to child-care to rear,
but she knew it best
that we all have less
for them to have more of her near .
Should one-income couples pay more
in taxes for child-care galore
so two-income fam'lies
can sample life's candies
and pay less for child-caring chores?

Of course the right answer is "No."
So who does that leave-- Do you know?
Those two-income fam'lies
and grandads and grannies--
and college-kid's parents-- but whoa !
All in those groups will say "No,
we just can't afford to pay mo' "
Who, then, is left
to be made bereft
for yuppies to keep up their show?

Who should be brought to their knees
to pay for such big-spending sprees?
They must not tax me,
and shouldn't tax thee,
just tax that guy behind the tree

Belated "thanks" to those in the ranks (a limerick)(du20000430-01)
    Some baby-boomers still cling
to views in their Sixty-Eight Spring
    They now pay lip-service
    to those who did service
in words with a quite hollow ring.
    Regrets they distribute like crumbs
for treating our soldiers like bums/
    They still do not see
    Vietnam would be
a much better place if we'd won.

With their kids not subject to draft,
they suddenly learned a new craft.
    Those dads and moms
    demanded we bomb
the Serbs as our new moral task.
It just goes to show more and more,
it matters whose ox will be gored.
    Once they were charmed
    with safety from harm,
their true colors came to the fore.

Boomers made the crude and the rude socially acceptable (a limerick du20000324-01)
Before Boomers came to the fore,
    crude language was widely deplored.
    'Though crude words were said,
    'twas private instead
    'cause publicly it was abhorred.
    Then self-centered Boomers arrived
    (including this writer of rhymes)
    The song we did sing
    was "Do Your Own Thing"
and acted like crudeness was fine.

It's clear that we should have known better,
and been more polite like our elders.
    We hope that it ain't
    too late for restraint
and know we must try to do better.
