    No matter what happens today,
    no matter what terrorists say,
    our courage will prove
    that terror will lose
its war on the U-S of A.

What it means to be an "American.".. (7-3-02 updated reprise of last year's Update for 7-4-01)

    Before July 4th celebration,
let's ask who we'd call "real Americans"
    'cause some of us fear
    those naturalized here
as though they're not really "Americans."

A few think the place of one's birth
is how we should measure one's worth.
    Subliminal ways
    are how they convey
"We better since we were here first."

    But being American means
much more than the source of our genes.
    It's better defined
    by hopes in the minds
of those who came here to be free.
..
In celebrating the first Fourth of July since September 11,  which justifies our applying greater scrutiny to foreigners entering our country, it's useful to remind ourselves that immigrants made the USA the greatest civilization in all of human history because unlike virtually every other country, being "American" is a state of mind more than a condition of birth.  I've often observed a better understanding of being an "American" in the behavior of naturalized citizens I know than in many natural-born citizens I know. --Jim Wrenn, Editor@PoliSat.Com

.What it means to be an "American." ( limericks) (20000704-01)
    On this July 4th celebration,
let's ask who we'd call "real Americans"
    Some seem to fear
    the folks not born here
and don't think of them as "Americans."
Some think the place of one's birth
is how we should measure one's worth.
    And they seem to say
    in subliminal ways,
"We better since we were here first."

    But being American means
much more than the source of our genes.
    It's better defined
    by hopes in the minds
of those who come here to be free.

Impression of the new movie, The Patriot. (a limerick) (du20000701-01)
I just saw the new movie Patriot
a movie I found quite audacious.
    It clearly reveals:
    excesses in zeal
compete with our more noble nature.
The son of the man played by Gibson
    quite strongly resisted temptation.
    Because he knew hate
    would stand in the way
of goals for a noble, new nation.

And likewise, the slave who joined with 'em,
whose first goal was gaining his freedom--
    Then used his new rights
    to risk his own life
with hopes to give other slaves freedom.
