In Memory of Tony Snow (1955-2008)  (July 14, 2008 Update-- scroll down or click here)

July 12, 2008--

.

Today, we feel great sadness to learn that Tony Snow died this morning.  In expressing our sorrow at his passing and our condolences to his friends and family, it's difficult to do so in a manner worthy of the style and dignity that was the hallmark of his conduct as a pundit, a public official, a family man and a great American.

To the left is a video tribute by Brit Hume broadcast on July 12, 2008, following Tony Snow's early-morning death that day.

Here's my feeble attempt to pay tribute to this decent man:.

Today with great sadness did I
hear news Tony Snow has just died.

Say all who did know
the man, Tony Snow,
"To know him made better our lives."

I never was privileged to meet
this man of such outstanding feats

who showed his ability

to keep his humility
and treat friends and foes with respect.

His children have lost a great father;

His wife, her significant other,
His colleagues, a friend,
His viewers, a friend,
And freedom, a passionate lover.

July 14, 2008 Update:

On July 12, 2008, Fox News White House Correspondent Bret Baier paid an eloquent and moving tribute to Tony Snow (while being interviewed live by a Fox News anchor during tributes to Snow) by reading an early 20th Century quotation defining "The True Gentleman" as being a perfect description of Tony Snow.  Here's the quotation he read:

"The True Gentleman is the man whose conduct proceeds from good will and an acute sense of propriety, and whose self-control is equal to all emergencies; who does not make the poor man conscious of his poverty, or any man of his inferiority or deformity; who is himself humbled; who does not flatter wealth, cringe before power, or boast of his own possessions or achievements; who speaks with frankness but always with sincerity and sympathy; whose deed follows his word; who thinks of the rights and feelings of others, and who appears well in any company, a man with whom honor is sacred and virtue safe. "

"The True Gentleman"  John Walter Wayland 1909

I thank Bret Baier for sending me the quotation in response to my request.  Another site which has seen fit to post this quotation as an appropriate description of Snow is the Small Wars Journal

Feb. 17, 2005--

Politicians and pundits of all stripes extend best wishes for a quick defeat of colon cancer by Tony Snow, renowned practitioner of civility in political discourse.

The topic today that I chose is one I've selected to show my wish for complete and speedy relief for Tony, whose last name is Snow.  Among those as pundits who serve political party hors d'oeuvres, he always displays his menu in ways so feasts without food-fights occur.  Though Snow's colonoscopy's answer was "yes" to the question if cancer had started to grow, we're happy to know his "doc" says he'll vanquish the cancer.  So, therefore, this limerick I send to Snow to revise and extend my thoughts in support that quickly he thwarts the cancer and thoroughly mends. In case you prefer the design of comments that nat'rually rhyme, read-on for this text repeated and set according to rhythm and rhyme.

The topic today that I chose
is one I've selected to show
my wish for complete
and speedy relief
for Tony, whose last name is Snow.

Among those as pundits who serve
political party hors d'oeuvres
he always displays
his menu in ways
so feasts without food-fights occur.

Though Snow's colonoscopy's answer
was "yes" to the question if cancer
had started to grow,
we're happy to know
his "doc" says he'll vanquish the cancer.

So, therefore, this limerick I send
to Snow to revise and extend
my thoughts in support
that quickly he thwarts
the cancer and thoroughly mends.

Politicians, pundits and political junkies of all stripes were at first saddened by Tony Snow's February 15, 2005, announcement that he has colon cancer and then heartened by his assertion that his doctors say they found it in time for it to be cured.  If more politicians and pundits could express their differences with others without rancor and in the manner of civility that Tony Snow always manages to exhibit, there would be fewer people deserving to be targeted by caustic satire.  We all need you to stick around to keep setting a good example, Tony.
