Satire-- Ellis Weiner's so-called "liberal" view of "conservative" satire ignores distinctions among various forms of satire.

Regarding "Why Conservatives Aren't Funny" by Ellis Weiner at the Huffington Post:  Only blind ideologues are incapable of laughing at themselves and thus unable to perceive humor in humorous satire targeting them. They're likewise incapable of recognizing themselves in polemic satire. (With respect to polemic satire, remember Jonathan Swift?) Perhaps (probably) they don't even know the difference-- even those with ostensible "pedigrees" in satire.

Most so-called "conservatives" I know find it quite easy to laugh at satirical humor targeting them or Bush-- indeed, Bush himself laughs at it, but only Bush-hating ideologues laugh at polemic satire (targeting BushHitler/CheneyGoerbels) undergirded by hatred-- especially the adolescent, narcissistic, intellectually masturbatory variety so loved by Bush-hating illiberals. Likewise, most liberals (i.e., classical liberals) I know find it quite easy to laugh at satirical humor targeting them, and some (perhaps many) of them (as well as most "conservatives") are able to recognize themselves in polemic satire when it's not obviously a manifestation of blind hatred. Most people, whether they be "conservative" or "liberal" appreciate non-hateful polemic satire designed to provoke introspection rather than laughter.

Those afflicted with blind hatred for Bush apparently suffer a subconscious compulsion to also feel blind hatred for "Fox News" such that they may be able to "laugh" at satirical humor targeting Bush often featured in the final segment of Brit Hume's "Special Report" program but not at final segments featuring satirical humor targeting BushHaters.

Unlike Ellis Weiner, who boasts a grand "pedigree" in satire, most of us know the difference between humorous satire, polemic satire and hateful satire. Most of us find humor in the first type and food for thought in the second but feel outrage, disgust or disdain with respect to the third.
