Many political experts predict that Hillary's campaign will also begin trying to shift the media spotlight to Obama's vulnerabilities: One set of such vulnerabilities arise from Obama's past dealings with Tony Rezko, whose trial on white-collar-crime charges will continue during the campaign (which dealings Obama has characterized as "bone-headed" mistakes on his part). Another vulnerability arises from it appearing that Obama was inappropriately solicitous towards a still-non-repentant radical "Weather Underground" terrorist in 1960's named William Ayers, who not only has admitted, but bragged about, committing terrorist acts against the Pentagon and the police in the 1960's. (Questions: How would the so-called "mainstream" media have already treated any such so-called "rite of passage" career-building meeting by any candidate other than Obama if such "right of passage" meeting were to have been with David Duke? Why has Obama's "right of passage" meeting with Ayers been such a non-story thus far for the so-called "manstream" media? To paraphrase Mr. Rogers, "Can you say 'bias'?")
However, most pundits seem to think the current political-correctness fear of being branded a "bigot" will deter almost everyone from questioning Obama's judgment with respect to his continuing, long-term membership in a church led by a pastor who seems not only to harbor and express quite bigoted views but also to admire another advocate of bigotry named Louis Farrahkan. What if the pastor of the church in which Obama maintains membership were to have given an "achievement award" to David Duke? The media would have bitten into that story months ago and would justifiably still be asking any other candidate when, or whether, he plans to "resign" from such church. (Remember the media firestorm during the campaign in 2000 over mere "visits" to Bob Jones University by politicians not "members" of, or contributors to, Jones' church or university?). That Obama himself seems quite obviously not to be bigoted at all doesn't excuse his membership in a church led by a bigot who gives awards to bigots. It's just not the equivalent, for example, of a Christian remaining in a church led by a pastor with doctrinal or theological views (or non-bigoted political views) with which such member disagrees.
To return to the "red phone" ad, it's difficult to imagine it's effect not being more likely to make voters think that the person they'd want to deal with terrifying situations involving national security would be "the Maverick" John McCain given the fact that his life history proved him more than capable of dealing with terrifying problems on a 24/7 basis for many years as a prisoner of war enduring frequent torture. Many people don't know that the reason he doesn't raise his arms over his head in the typical "victory" gesture so common on the part of politicians is that he can't raise his arms over his head as a result of mistreatment and torture he endured (something beyond the grasp of Gloria Steinem) at the hands of the people Jane Fonda (and the rest of the then-young/now-geezerfying/now-Code-Pink Left and Hollywood Left) were too busy lauding.
