While Time magazine names Russia's Vladimir Putin "Man of the Year" and most of the rest of the so-called "manstream" media focuses on the contests for the Democrat and Republican nominations for President in 2008, few are paying attention to what historians may recognize as a historical re-definition of "lame duck" by President George Bush thanks to the military ingenuity of General David Petraeus, the courage and tenacity of our troops and Bush's own dogged determination. Harry Truman, much maligned in the waning years of his presidency yet much revered today for his dogged determination for classical Western liberalism to forcefully resist the expansionist goals of Stalinist and Maoist totalitarianism, must be not only turning over in his grave at the defeatist stance adopted by those currently in control of his party but also turning green with envy regarding Bush's re-definition of the term "lame duck president."

At the beginning of 2007-- in the wake of the November, 2006, elections pronounced by the "mainstream" media as the political obituary of the "lame-duck president" George Bush-- the political skies seemed dark for supporters of victory in Iraq and bright for those advocating a time-constrained end-game strategy virtually certain to guarantee defeat of American by the forces of religiously fanatical totalitarianism. Reid and Pelosi seemed poised not merely to hamper but to cripple Bush's strategy in Iraq.

Often the Reid/Pelosi team answered demands of their far-left political base by actions disguised as "support" for our troops. In the guise of "supporting" the troops, Reid and Pelosi attempted to impose draconian budgetary limitations by stretching until late Spring the votes on desperately needed funding. Those delays nearly crippled the efforts of the troops to suppress the violence and promote stability in Iraq. Unable to overcome Bush's determination to exercise his veto powers in support of his role as Commander in Chief at that time, they reprised such efforts again in the Fall but with even less success. As their political clout fell, Bush's clout rose, but the "mainstream" media's intellectual investment in the narrative of defeat blinded them to the long-term political significance of Bush's re-definition of the term "lame-duck president."

Is Bush the ghost of Harry Truman? No, he's the rejuvenated spirit of classical Western liberalism. That's the kind of "liberalism" that most "conservatives" strongly support in contrast to the self-defeatism currently embraced by the now-dominant Left Wing-- nay, entire fuselage-- of Truman's (and John F. Kennedy's) "successors" in their party. Bush has offered the country the opportunity to re-embrace its post-World-War-II "classical western liberalism" founded recognition of the principles (to paraphrase Kennedy) that American must "bear any burden, oppose any foe and support any friend" to assure the ultimate triumph of "liberty" over totalitarianism.
